Decebalus ruled Dacia from 87 to 106 AD. He is renowned for waging three wars against the Roman Empire under two emperors, achieving mixed results. After launching a series of raids across the Danube River, Decebalus successfully repelled a Roman invasion during Domitian's reign, securing an era of independence and giving him time to solidify his rule. When Trajan rose to power, his armies invaded Dacia in an attempt to weaken its threat to Roman borderlands. Decebalus was defeated but managed to maintain control as a client king, continuing to assert his independence, which ultimately led to a final and crushing Roman invasion in 105 AD. In 106 AD, Trajan captured the Dacian capital of Sarmizegetusa, incorporating Dacia into the Empire. Decebalus took his own life rather than face capture. In the mid-19th century, Decebalus began to be celebrated as a national hero in Romania, the modern successor to ancient Dacia. Several monuments have been erected in his honor.
