DEC PDP-11 keyring keyfob
thingiverse
A fun little tribute to one of the most iconic and influential ranges of computers in history. Key fob dimensions measure 2-3/8" long x 1-1/8" wide x 5/32" thick, or 60mm x 30mm x 4mm. This project didn't take much time to complete. I already had the CAD artwork for a recreation of the digital masthead from the H960 rack (a work in progress) on hand, so I simply used a fragment of that drawing as two DXF files here. The outer part of the keyring fob is white and the inner letters are printed in magenta filament with a rose-coloured hue. The filament was sourced from a 20-something colour sample pack found on eBay. I planned to use superglue to attach the letter pieces, but it wasn't necessary. All that was required was to bevel the rear edges of the letters slightly using an Exacto #11 blade before press-fitting them into place. The pieces were clamped between two clean pieces of wood in a vise. A solid version with no internal lettering pieces is also available if preferred. No support or raft is needed for any piece, but it's highly recommended to use 100% infill for all pieces. I was pleased to find that the final '1' character was mechanically attached well enough not to require additional support or a backing plate. The keyfob is shown attached to the console key of a PDP-11/05 computer.
