January 23rd, 2021 Harewood, Nanaimo, BC Pine Siskins have been mysteriously dying across our province over the past month. Local bird populations in BC have made a steady recovery since governments worldwide initiated lockdowns, creating opportunities for pests, viruses, and disease to spread freely. Wildlife sanctuaries and animal hospitals confirm that these Pine Siskins on Vancouver Island were infected with Salmonella. To prevent this, you can take several crucial steps: Firstly, regularly clean your bird feeders with hot water as bacteria can thrive on the surface. This simple act can save countless lives. Secondly, when scattering seeds, disperse them evenly across different areas to minimize contact between individual birds. This straightforward approach can significantly reduce the risk of disease transmission. Thirdly, if possible, keep your cats indoors not only for the safety of local bird populations but also for the well-being of your feline friends. Pathogens can spread easily between species, posing a significant threat to both animals and humans. I'm fed up with finding decapitated bird heads on my doorstep, a grim reminder of the devastating consequences of inaction.
