The DeLorean DMC-12 is a sports car manufactured by John DeLorean's company for the American market from 1981 to 1983. It features gull-wing doors, a fiberglass body with steel backbone chassis and stainless steel exterior. The DeLorean time machine was its iconic modified version in the Back to the Future franchise. Production began in 1981 in Belfast, Northern Ireland, with changes made to features like hood style, wheels and interior during production. About 9,000 DMC-12s were manufactured before production stopped in 1983. The only DeLorean model, the company later liquidated due to a car market slump. In 2007, about 6,500 DeLoreans still existed. Texas-based "DeLorean Motor Company" was established in 1995 by British entrepreneur Stephen Wynne and uses remaining parts of the original company. The firm plans to build 300-325 replica 1982 DMC-12s for $100,000 each.
