The McDonnell Douglas DC-10 is a three-engine widebody airliner built for medium to long-range flights. Two engines are mounted underwing and a third engine at the base of the vertical stabilizer. The DC-10 was designed as a successor to the DC-8, competing with other similar aircraft like the A300, 747, and L-1011 Tristar. All major textures on the DC-10's surface are high-definition 2K resolution. Color maps are provided, along with Photoshop templates for each detail that can be downloaded. Production of the DC-10 ended in December 1988, with a total of 386 aircraft delivered to airlines and 60 to the US Air Force as KC-10 Extender air-to-air refueling tankers. The DC-10 was eventually replaced by the MD-11, which entered service in 1990. The design of the DC-10 began in 1967 after a merger between two companies. It was built according to specifications from American Airlines for a widebody aircraft capable of flying long-range routes with shorter runway lengths. Although the 747 had commercial advantages due to its size, smaller airports could not accommodate it because of gate restrictions and runway length. The DC-10 first took flight on August 29, 1970, and entered commercial service with launch customer American Airlines on August 5, 1971, on a round trip between Los Angeles and Chicago. This was nearly a year before the L-1011 Tristar's entry into service. The similarity in passenger capacity and simultaneous launch resulted in intense sales competition that affected profitability. Launch customers for the DC-10 were American Airlines with 25 orders for the Series 10 model and United Airlines with 60 orders. However, the DC-10 was able to differentiate itself from competitors by having a second engine supplier, which introduced competition and potential cost savings.
