The DC-10 is a legendary American three-engine medium- to long-range widebody airliner that dominates the skies with two engines mounted on underwing pylons and a third engine at the base of the vertical stabilizer. This remarkable model was born out of necessity, succeeding the company's DC-8 for long-range operations, and has been competing in the same markets as the A300, 747, and L-1011 Tristar. All major surface textures are mind-blowingly detailed with a resolution of 2K in greatest dimension. Color maps are provided to enhance your visual experience, and Photoshop templates for each detail are available for download to help you unlock its full potential. History is made when production of the DC-10 came to an end in December 1988, with a staggering total of 386 delivered to airlines and 60 to the U.S. Air Force as air-to-air refueling tankers, designated the KC-10 Extender. The DC-10 paved the way for its successor, the related MD-11, which took to the skies in 1990. The design of the DC-10 began in 1967, marking a new era in commercial aviation after the merger between Aircraft Corporation and Aircraft Company. It was built to meet the specifications of American Airlines for a widebody aircraft that could fly similar long-range routes from airports with shorter runways. Despite the 747's commercial advantages due to its size, smaller airports were restricted by gate restrictions and runway length, making it impossible to accommodate. The DC-10 capitalized on this limitation, offering a more practical solution. The DC-10 took to the skies for the first time on August 29, 1970, and entered commercial service with launch customer American Airlines on August 5, 1971, on a round trip flight between Los Angeles and Chicago. This marked nearly a year before the L-1011 Tristar took to the skies (built to a similar specification), resulting in a head-to-head sales competition that affected the profitability of the aircraft. The launch customers for the DC-10 were American Airlines and United Airlines, with orders for 25 and 60 respectively of the Series 10 model. Eventually, the DC-10 was able to distinguish itself from its competitors with a second engine supplier, which has the possible effect of controlling costs due to competition, as well as earlier introduction of longer range variants than the L-1011.
