DB-A ("Long-Range Bomber - Academy") is a Soviet experimental long-range heavy bomber designed and built under Viktor Bolkhovitinov's leadership as a top Russian Soviet aircraft designer. Soviet pilots set four world records in flight range with cargo between 1936 and 1937. Until 1940, the DB-A was produced in small series and used primarily as transport aircraft. On August 12, 1937, four-engine plane DB-A tail number N-209 took off from Moscow with a crew of six men under S.A. Levanevsky's command, heading to Fairbanks, Alaska, USA across the North pole. Radio contact was lost on August 13 at 17:58 Moscow time after flying over the North pole.
