This design is directly inspired by Mexican art and the iconic imagery of the day of the dead skulls. Day of the Dead is a significant holiday celebrated in Mexico and around the world among diverse cultures. The focus of this holiday is on gatherings of family and friends who come together to honor and remember loved ones who have passed away. The Day of the Dead celebrations in Mexico can be traced back thousands of years to a pre-Columbian past, with rituals honoring the deaths of ancestors observed for perhaps as long as 2,500–3,000 years. The festival that evolved into modern Day of the Dead took place during the ninth month of the Aztec calendar, roughly around August's beginning, and lasted for an entire month. The festivities were dedicated to the goddess known as the "Lady of the Dead," equivalent to the contemporary figure of Catrina.
