Human: Origin: Scotland Producer: Thomas & Williams Date: 1900 Height: 25 cm Diameter: 9.5 cm The Davy Lamp was first patented in 1817 by Sir Humphry Davy, as a solution for the many mine gas explosions in the British mines. He discovered that a small basket made from copper mesh around the flame could absorb the heat and prevent explosions. Additionally, the lamp provided a test for the presence of gases. If flammable gas mixtures were present, the flame of the Davy lamp burned brighter with a blue hue. Moreover, the lamp consisted of a pot with some oil in it to fuel the wick. A major drawback of the lamp was that it did not light very effectively. Creator: Ruqin Hu
