DaVinci Open Back Project
thingiverse
I wanted to reclaim the open space in my DaVinci's back end. That's when this idea came up. The spool holder should fit spools that are 95mm wide or less. I might post a shorter spool holder for people who use narrower spools and don't want anything sticking out at the back. I recommend printing these parts with an infill of 70% or more so they're sturdy enough to handle heavy loads. They can probably be printed without supports, but they come out cleaner when you do use them. The spool holder requires a single 608 bearing. Later on, I tested this design with a full roll and found that the bearing allowed too much movement, which caused it to unravel. Eventually, I'll redesign the spool holder so it doesn't move around. For now, I've just pushed it against a wall to stop it from rotating. My original spool holder failed after supporting a few heavy rolls. To fix this problem, I tweaked the design to use an 8mm-1.25 x 70mm bolt that I had lying around from a hobbed bolt that I never built. This new version of the spool holder can be printed flat.
