Human: Homeland: Eastern Asia. Description: The plant is a deciduous shrub that grows up to 4 meters tall, with oval-shaped and oppositely arranged leaves. The leaves are grayish-green on the underside due to dense star-shaped hairs. Flowers are clustered in long, dense spikes at the end of one-year-old branches. The inflorescence is cylindrical, purple (sometimes also pink, red, white or blue-purple). The flowers attract butterflies. Fruits are multiple-seeded heads that remain on the plant and release seeds throughout winter. Bloom Period: July - August. Seed Maturity: September onwards. Propagation and Spread: It propagates through seeds released from fruits late in autumn and winter. Vegetative propagation occurs through rooting of suckers. To prevent seed propagation, cut off inflorescences immediately after flowering. Habitat: Ornamental shrub that often invades. It grows on warm, dry habitats such as rocky outcrops, road embankments, ruins, weed patches and sand dunes.
