Antonin Mercié (1845-1916) brought to life the biblical tale of David's triumph over Goliath by depicting the young hero in a youthful, androgynous, and elegant manner reminiscent of Florentine Renaissance masterpieces from the 1440s. The soft contours of Mercié's figure and strong contrapposto stance pay homage to Donatello's renowned works. Mercié's artwork, commissioned by France's Third Republic, commemorates the bravery of men who resisted Prussian invasions in 1870, celebrating the glory of French heritage through public monuments like 'Gloria Victis' presented at the Salon of 1874 and Quand Meme ('even so'), a model for a group erected in Belfort in 1884.
