150k polygons model of the head. David is a breathtaking Renaissance sculpture crafted in marble between 1501 and 1504 by Michelangelo, a renowned Italian artist. This iconic statue stands at an impressive 5.17-metres (17.0 ft) tall, depicting the legendary Biblical figure David - a popular theme in Florence's art scene. Initially commissioned as one of several prophets to be placed atop the east end of Florence Cathedral, David was instead proudly displayed in the public square outside the Palazzo Vecchio, the heart of Florence's civic government, in the Piazza della Signoria. Unveiled on September 8th, 1504, the statue was later relocated to the Galleria dell'Accademia, Florence, in 1873, and eventually replaced at its original location with a replica. David soon became an enduring symbol of the Republic of Florence's fight for civil liberties, as this independent city-state struggled against powerful rival states and the influence of the Medici family. With his piercing gaze fixed intently on Rome, David's eyes serve as a warning to those who would threaten Florence's freedom.
