David Octavius Hill

The striking sculpture of photographer D O Hill (1802-1870) is created by his second wife, Amelia Robertson Paton. She captures her husband's likeness in an impressive portrait bust, showcasing him draped in classical attire rather than modern clothing. Amelia playfully encouraged Hill to finish his most elaborate painting, The Signing of the Deed of Demission. This monumental artwork commemorates the founding of the Free Church of Scotland and features portraits of over 400 ministers. Begun in 1843, it wasn't until 1867 that the masterpiece was finally unveiled to the public eye. A critic at the time wrote that Hill had brought his vision to life with a heroism unmatched in the history of art.
