David
myminifactory
Commissioned in 1408 by the Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore, this marble David marks Donatello's first major work of art. Initially intended for a counterfort on the tribune of the Duomo alongside Nanni di Banco's Isaiah, it was never actually placed there. By 1416, the statue had been acquired by Palazzo della Signoria, where it was prominently displayed in the Sala dell'Orologio as a powerful symbol of Florentine independence. To emphasize the victorious warrior's spirit, several modifications were made to accentuate the sling with which David defeated Goliath according to biblical account. The elegant folds of his drapery and the tilt of his bust remain quintessentially Gothic in style, while his head bears a striking resemblance to ancient sculpture.
