Cindy Guzman Math 401-001: Mathematics Through 3D Printing, Fall 2021 November 22, 2021 Data Visualization of US High School Dropout and Prison For this week's assignment, I decided to do a data visualization showing the following variables: US High School Dropouts, the likelihood of these dropout going to prison and the time period from 1974 to 2014. I was interested at looking at these topics because I'm interested in learning more about the US education system and the mass incarceration problem we have in the US today. Through my research, I learned that high school dropouts have about an 80% chance of heading to prison, whether that would be local, state or federal. This makes sense since high school dropouts have less opportunities as far as careers and tend to engage in criminal behavior in order to make a living somehow. Although high school dropout starting to decline in the 1990s, it has been show that racial groups such as Latino students are facing higher rates of dropping out of high school. I believe this data is important to see to start to ask questions of how did we get here and what can be done to further encourage students to complete their education. If I could redo my print, I would show my data for a specific decade to further show the pattern between the variables. I think it's hard to see the difference throughout my print. The peak in my print represents the 1990's when the high school dropout population was at its highest before it began to decline.
