DASH: Dual Adjustable Spool Holder
prusaprinters

This spool holder originates from Dominik Císař's work in the Original Prusa i3 MK3 ENCLOSURE - Ikea Lack table - Prusa Research. Subsequently, Necko released a remixed version of the spook holder leveraging 608 (skateboard) bearings. I further modified that work to allow adjustment of both sides of the Spool holder for easier centering. I also scaled the bearing wheel down by 3% as Necko's version seemed far too loose. I mean it would have worked but as long as I was working with it, I may as well make it more perfect.

I do recommend you get decent bearings for this, as the cheap Chinese bearings can be pretty sub-optimal. Also, I printed the Bearing Wheels (the part which surrounds the bearings) in NinjaFlex to provide a little grip and cushioning.

With both of the carriages siding/removable, this can be used for smaller spools like the ones Prusa sends with upgrade kits and some TPU spools. Be sure to use the intended countersunk screw heads or else you will not be able to take advantage of this feature.

A complete printed model for one spool is made up of:

1 x Bearing Carriage Track

2 x Bearing Carriage

4 x Bearing Wheel

4 x Bearing Axle Cap

4 x Bearing Axle

If you plan to print everything in a single print (without the NinjaFlex wheels) you may print one of the “Dual Adjustable Spool Holder” model which contains all of the pieces for one setup.

You will also need:

4 x 608 Bearings

The Bearing Carriage Track is affixed with 2 each #6 x ¾" flat-head screws.

Update on 4/21/2021: Since someone decided to rate the entire project one of five stars because they don't understand 3D printing and clearances, I have modified the Bearing Wheel. There are now two versions:

TPU Bearing Wheel

PTE Bearing Wheel

The differences are very slight, the PET is slightly larger. I guess now I need to warn everyone to do a test print on things that must have exact clearances. I'm betting cheaper bearings may not be precise. I know for a fact different printers are not always calibrated perfectly, and different materials may shrink when cool.

This is why we calibrate our printers, and this is why we are able to scale prints.
