The one known fossil of Darwinius, called Ida, was unearthed in 1983[2] from the Messel pit, an abandoned quarry situated near the village of Messel, approximately 35 kilometers (22 miles) southeast of Frankfurt, Germany. Initially excavated by an amateur, the fossil was divided into a slab and partial counterslab before being sold separately; it wasn't until 2007 that it was reassembled. This fossil is of a young female, measuring about 58 centimeters (23 inches) in overall length, with her head and body length excluding the tail coming in at around 24 centimeters (9.4 inches). It's estimated that Ida died at roughly 80-85% of her projected adult height and limb span.
