I took the family members on a recent vacation to various attractions, including a museum with a fascinating automata exhibit that caught everyone's attention. The kids and grandkids suggested I design and 3D print a version of the automata featuring Darth Vader instead of the generic figure in the museum piece, which is now known as "Darth". While much smaller than and less complex than the original, Darth still presents a significant challenge to print, assemble and align. The design incorporates 26 unique 3D printed parts out of 81 total parts, and eight 3D printed turnbuckles with both left and right hand threads for fine tuning. I will describe below how I printed, assembled and aligned the various components that make up Darth. As always, I may have forgotten a file or two, so if you notice any errors or discrepancies, please don't hesitate to point them out - I'm not perfect and do make mistakes regularly. I designed Darth using Autodesk Fusion 360, sliced it with Cura 3.5.1, and printed it in PLA on both an Ultimaker 2+ Extended and an Ultimaker 3 Extended.
