The Savonius-style wind turbine is a type of horizontal axis wind turbine used to produce electricity by capturing the kinetic energy present in moving air currents. Typically consisting of two symmetrical or asymmetrical, flat and wing-shaped scoops, often—but not necessarily always—vertically positioned on a slowly turning shaft or mast framework. This particular design for wind power turbines was originally developed and patented by British engineer Allan John Eckersley in the 1920s. The efficiency of these turbine systems compares theoretically to the H-rotor style when constant winds exist; however, practically it usually doesn't meet up with the high theoretical potential because mechanical strains, real world turbulence fluctuations, physical constraints associated with actual manufacturing designs and changing wind speed can interfere greatly. Major concerns exist also for effectively protecting this specific wind machine design from damaging wind storm impacts, while developing self-start capabilities remain a challenging issue in reality.
