Durante degli Alighieri (c. 1265–1321), was a renowned Italian poet of the Middle Ages. His Divine Comedy, originally called Comedìa and later referred to as Divina by Boccaccio, is widely regarded as the greatest literary masterpiece composed in the Italian language and a supreme work of world literature. In Italy, he is revered as il Sommo Poeta ("the Supreme Poet") and il Poeta. Along with Petrarch and Boccaccio, they are also known as "the three fountains" and "the three crowns". Dante is also celebrated as "the Father of the Italian language". This life-sized bust, crafted by an anonymous sculptor, depicts the poet wearing a distinctive leafed crown that has become iconic in his representations.
