Dancing on the Bridge

Dancing on the Bridge flaunts an elaborate design with a sculptural component and large wavy-branch handle that take center stage, commanding attention at every turn. Dr Iskandar's extensive sketches and architectural notes have inspired and shaped many of his pottery forms, including mosque arches, towers, domes, and temple gateways. The impetus behind this piece lies not in replicating a structural form or likeness of 'a bridge', but rather in infusing the pot with mood and movement that capture its essence. Dr Iskandar's 'clay diary' recounts his exhilarating experience on the Sydney bridge climb in 2004, which has become an enduring source of inspiration for him. The 'bridge' is subtly suggested by the sculptural, scroll-like attachment that doubles as a handle-rest, while the sizeable waves of the handle create pictorial rhythms that echo the dynamic gestures of dancing. Through the sgrafitto technique, expressive lines are incised on the pot's belly, conveying a sense of vigorous energy and movement.
