TitleDancer at RestArtistEdgar Degas (1834-1917)Dateca. 1870-1900MediumBronzeDimensionsxAccession #1989Q6CreditOn loan from the James Archdale Collection 'Dancer at Rest' showcases a female model posing in a manner seen in many of Degas' sculptures, pastels and oil paintings. She is depicted as both a dancer resting backstage and a bather in her bedroom. The artist's intentions behind his sculptures are unclear, with only one exhibited during his lifetime. Degas claimed they were 'documentary, preparatory motions' created to aid him in his work on paper and canvas. This theory is supported by the fact that the models' faces are often vague, while their physiques are detailed, as seen in 'Dancer at Rest'. This object is part of "Scan The World", a non-profit initiative launched by MyMiniFactory, which aims to create a digital archive of fully 3D printable sculptures and artworks from around the globe for public access.
