The nine Muses, like the trio of Graces, are born from Jupiter's lineage. They reside on Mount Helicon in Greece, where they're surrounded by the soothing waters of Hippocrene's fountain and revered as goddesses of artistic inspiration. A grand festival unfolds each time the sun god passes by Mount Helicon, and it's this very celebration that the relief captures. In its center, a small mound is home to three naked Graces, their forms depicted with a level of detail that echoes an earlier model crafted by Thorvaldsen in 1804.
