Sculpture created by Auguste Rodin in 1889 is a terracotta piece measuring 20.2 x 36.5 x 27.5 cm, featuring a female mythological figure inspired by Greek mythology's Danaïd legend. According to this legend, the Danaïds were sent to the underworld and condemned to fill an endless vessel with water. The female figure in Rodin's sculpture is depicted in a bent pose that conveys despair and desperation in the face of this impossible task. Initially intended as part of The Gates of Hell series, Rodin's work was later enlarged and carved from marble for Herman Frithiof Antell. Inspired by its success, Rodin produced additional copies in various materials including marble, bronze, and other mediums.
