Dame Elizabeth Frink's breathtaking masterpiece, a life-sized trio of figures, was unveiled atop Gallows Hill on South Walks in 1986, and has since become an iconic symbol of her artistic genius. The site in Dorchester commemorates the location where the town's gallows stood for centuries, situated just beyond the ancient town walls. Dedicated to the memory of those who suffered during the tumultuous religious conflicts of the 16th and 17th centuries, many of whom were brutally executed for their faith. Frink's powerful work features three figures: a hooded figure, the hangman, standing watch over the two resigned martyrs, whose clasped hands convey a sense of defiance as one gazes unflinchingly into the hangman's eyes.
