Damaged German Stahlhelm Helmet

This helmet was salvaged from a grandfather's basement as part of Scan The World's extensive collection. Copies of this helmet are available at other War museums for those interested in seeing it up close. Farmers lost their land during the war due to widespread violence, resulting in destroyed crops and hazardous terrain littered with undetonated bombs, mines, and corpses. As a result, much of their farmland became uninhabitable for an unknown period. This led to the rise of 'War Tourism,' where landowners would salvage war trophies from their land and sell them to tourists such as soldiers, locals, and visitors. This helmet is an example of one of these war treasures; visible puncture wounds indicate that only impact holes are present on the helmet, with none penetrating the other side. This was a common occurrence: many soldiers purchased helmets from unofficial merchants who manually destroyed them by punching holes through them. These damaged helmets were then taken back home and used as storytelling tools. The Imperial War Museum has preserved this helmet to raise public awareness about these events.
