The Dalmatian is a medium-sized dog known for its distinctive black or liver spotted coat, which initially served as a carriage dog. Its origins date back to Croatia's Dalmatia region. Today, it is a popular family pet and competes in kennel club events. The breed stands 19-23 inches tall, with males slightly larger than females. Ideally, the height should not exceed 24 inches. The dog's outline should be square when viewed from the side, with a well-laid back shoulder, well-bent stifle, and well-let down hocks. Round feet with arched toes and nails that are typically white or matching the spots adorn this breed. The ears taper towards the tip and are set high on the head. Eye color can be brown, amber, or blue, sometimes in various combinations or as a single blue eye and a brown one.[5] [6] [7] Newborn Dalmatians lack spots initially.
