Dallas ranks fourth among US metropolitan areas by population, situated in Texas. The Dallas-Fort Worth metro area boasts the second-highest population growth among US metropolitan areas, reaching a record-breaking population of 7,233,323 as of July 1, 2016. Located in North Texas, Dallas serves as the central hub of the largest metropolitan area in the South and the largest inland metropolitan area in the United States without access to any navigable body of water. Major railroad lines were built through the area, enabling access to cotton, cattle, and later oil in North and East Texas. Threatened by multiple cultures over thousands of years, the Caddo people inhabited the Dallas region before Spanish colonizers claimed the territory of Texas as part of the Viceroyalty of New Spain in the 18th century. Later, France also claimed the area but failed to establish significant settlements. In 1819, the Adams-Onis Treaty between the United States and Spain defined the Red River as the northern boundary of New Spain, solidifying Spanish control over the region that would become Dallas. The area remained under Spanish rule until 1821, when Mexico declared independence from Spain, placing it within the Mexican state of Coahuila y Tejas. In 1836, Texians, primarily Anglo-American settlers, gained independence from Mexico and established the Republic of Texas. The Republic of Texas was annexed by the United States in 1845, leading to the establishment of Dallas County the following year. Dallas officially became a city on February 2, 1856. The origin of the name remains uncertain. General consensus points to Dallas being named after either Dallas, Scotland or Senator George Mifflin Dallas from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Alternative theories propose Sen. George's brother, Commodore Alexander James Dallas, and brothers Walter R. Dallas and James R. Dallas. On November 22, 1963, President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dealey Plaza while his motorcade passed through downtown Dallas. The top two floors of the Texas School Book Depository building from which Lee Harvey Oswald allegedly fired, now serve as a museum showcasing Kennedy's life and achievements.
