Dainishi Nyorai, the universal Buddha, had suffered a devastating fate at the hands of Meiji State Shintō's radical reforms. This ancient model was brutally torn apart by fanatical nationalists who sought to eradicate Buddhism from Japanese soil during the Haibutsu kishaku, a dark chapter in Japan's history known as shinbutsu bunri. The face, the crown, and the sacred mudra were always the first targets of these destructions, leaving behind a trail of desecration and cultural devastation.
