Dagger Chape (specimen #094-44): A 15.5g Iron Artifact Uncovered at the Berry Site. The Berry Site (31BK22), located in Burke County, North Carolina, witnessed the excavation of this iron dagger chape in 2016 by Warren Wilson College Field School. Unit N813E203, level Plowzone 1 yielded the artifact. This iron relic serves as a scabbard tip for a leather-wrapped dagger or sword. The original owner likely belonged to Captain Juan Pardo's expedition from Santa Elena to the US interior in 1567. Their goal was to establish a route to Mexico's silver mines. Discovered near Fort San Juan, this artifact was found adjacent to Joara, a Native American town.
