The Dabqaad, known as "fire raiser" in Somali, is a traditional incense burner also referred to as an unsi or girgire. It typically features one or two handles and is widely used in Somalia, Djibouti, Yemen's southern region, and Ethiopia. Traditionally, dabqaads are employed to perfume homes after large meals and during special occasions when expecting guests. Frankincense or prepared incense, commonly referred to as bukhoor in countries across the Arabian Peninsula, is placed atop hot charcoal inside an incense burner, resulting in a fragrant aroma that lasts for hours. The dabqaad pot is crafted from white clay or soapstone found in specific areas of both southern and northern Somalia. Meerschaum, a type of sepiolite, is also used to manufacture dabqaads, with the district of El Buur serving as a major quarrying center. Additionally, El Buur is recognized for its local pipe-making industry. For Somalis residing in the West, obtaining dabqaads often involves visiting the Horn of Africa or having relatives from the region send them.
