This is my custom-made 80cm fan cooler for PLA printing, designed to tackle difficult prints with overhangs that refuse to relinquish curlings without proper ventilation. Without a fan, I was consistently thwarted by curled edges that threatened to upend the entire print. In an earlier experiment, I attempted to utilize a side-mounted fan but found it struggled to evenly disperse air, often resulting in spotty cooling. Confronted with these limitations, I resorted to an 80cm fan as my chosen solution due to its readily available presence at hand. Initially, I opted to plug the fan directly into my printer via USB cable; however, this approach proved cumbersome after a few initial layers, particularly those characterized by brims or rafts. To avoid interference with these crucial base layers, I chose instead to power up the fan towards the tail end of the printing process. My recommendation for printing enthusiasts involves employing ABS filament when tackling difficult prints due to its heat-resistance and stability, which enables closer proximity to the hot nozzles without inducing thermal shock or print collapse. Furthermore, utilizing ABS helps minimize support structure visibility by leveraging its solid-state form. By orienting prints in a 90-degree rotation using Slic3r or Simplify3D software, users can rest assured that any support material is systematically bypassed and won't impede airflow. Prudent practitioners should also be aware of potential clearance issues during assembly: when the clip comes into contact with the door, remember to leave sufficient room for unhindered movement. With a fast print in full swing, this design's clip-holding capabilities can ensure secure grip – provided minor wobbling motions don't compromise the stability. Nonetheless, some degree of play or give is perfectly normal. As always, users proceed at their own peril.
