Erected above Montaigne's tomb, in one of the chapels of the Feuillants convent in Bordeaux, the cenotaph was classified as a historic monument in 1862, then installed in the Faculties Palace in 1887. It is now on display at the Aquitaine Museum where it underwent a complete restoration in 2016. On this occasion, a photogrammetry of the monument and a 3D modeling were done for scientific documentation purposes and public valorization.
