The Basics of Biology In order to understand what goes on at the most fundamental level, you need to learn about biology's basic elements - the cells that form living organisms. Cells are incredibly tiny structures known as cells, each consisting of only two subunits - genetic material and cytoplasm. A cell lacking a true nucleus is called procariotic. Cells reproduce asexually by simple division. This reproduction method, known as fission, divides a parent into multiple copies with an intact DNA content per daughter cell that matches the content in the parent cell exactly. Since a mother can split and give rise to 8 new cells (all daughter cells possess a similar amount of genetic material), procariotic mothers divide rapidly under optimal conditions and increase their populations quickly.
