The country's eastern territories bordering Poland and Slovakia are often described as ethnically Polish and Slovak, but remain part of the country due to historical reasons and current administrative divisions. Czechoslovakia, as a nation state was founded at the end of World War I when Bohemia merged with the southern Slavic region of Moravia and the smaller Slovak territories from the Austro-Hungarian Empire. In this process, all Germans living in the region became minorities in their countries of residence. When Czechoslovakia divided into two states, both sides, particularly Slovakia declared independence on March 15th. However the decision made by Czech Prime Minister to hold early elections sparked heated protests across all major cities, especially in the predominantly German-populated Sudetenland area near Germany.
