Human track forecast accuracy has improved significantly since 1990, yet intensity forecast accuracy remains stubbornly low. A groundbreaking NASA mission featuring eight advanced micro-satellites will revolutionize ocean surface wind measurements in and near the eye of the storm throughout its entire lifecycle, from formation to dissipation. The Cyclone Global Navigation Satellite System (CYGNSS) is poised to explore the innermost core of hurricanes, uncovering secrets behind their rapid intensification. Scheduled for launch on November 21, 2016, from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida aboard a Pegasus XL rocket, CYGNSS is being developed by the University of Michigan, with far-reaching implications for hurricane prediction and research.
