In aviation and beyond Earth's atmosphere, a drone refers to an aircraft or spacecraft that flies without a human pilot on board. Also known as an unmanned aerial vehicle, or UAV, drones have numerous applications in both military and civilian fields. On our planet, they are often used for combat missions because they pose no risk to the lives of pilots in hazardous zones. Moreover, drones don't need rest periods, allowing them to stay airborne as long as there is fuel available and no technical issues arise. Technically speaking, space-based drones can encompass cargo vehicles, satellites, and machines that venture into outer space. However, these types are rarely referred to by this name. A prime example of a drone in space is the U.S. military's enigmatic X-37B spacecraft, which has successfully completed multiple orbits around our planet for hundreds of days at a time. Its mission remains classified, sparking intense speculation about its true purpose.
