Cwmbyr Lead Mine stands proudly at the head of Nant Cwmbyr valley, nestled near Aberhosan, Powys. Years of neglect took its toll on the mine when a forestry access track was built and deep ploughing for conifer planting ravaged the site in the 1970s. Since 2010, dedicated researchers with the Welsh Mines Preservation Trust have been hard at work here, uncovering some of Mid Wales' most impressively preserved timber dressing floors. The mine's story unfolded from around 1860 to 1887 before it sat idle for decades until a sale of what remained took place in the 1930s. During its operational years, Cwmbyr Lead Mine produced an impressive haul: 476.8 tons of lead concentrates, 816.7 tons of zinc ore, and a staggering 218 ounces of silver.
