Cuween Hill stands proudly near Finstown on Mainland, Orkney. The impressive drystone structure served as a communal burial ground during the Neolithic period and is part of the 'Maeshowe Group' of chambered cairns. It features four side cells opening off a tall central chamber, accessed through a long entrance passage, all neatly enclosed within a round cairn. The interior stonework is particularly remarkable, with enormous slabs spanning the width of the central chamber. Excavations conducted by James Cursiter in 1888 and Malcolm Charleson in 1901 uncovered the remains of at least eight individuals and numerous animal bones, including 24 canine skulls. Cut into the solid bedrock of the steep hillside where it sits, Cuween Hill offers breathtaking views over the Bay of Firth. Several Neolithic settlements have been discovered in this area. Cuween Hill is now under the care of Historic Environment Scotland. For information on visiting, please refer to our website.
