I attempted another previous design to test the union between two pieces using this clever method. Essentially, it is cut in half by a cube and the hole for the hitch piece is removed. The piece is well secured, although you can clearly see the joint plane. We have tried to separate and rejoin it multiple times, and the union weakens, but it still holds up.
