Sascha Bose Cutlery Set V1. Learn how to create a "bone effect" on 3D prints in this MyMiniFactory tutorial. Who am I? I'm Sascha Bose, a 25-year-old product designer from Germany with a huge interest in 3D printing. My inspirations come from nature and art that's inspired by it, like Art Nouveau. Nature is full of amazing things - a pool of ideas and solutions waiting to be discovered. Interestingly, 3D printing itself has a connection to nature, as the whole earth is made up of layers, just like how 3D printers work. You can see additive manufacturing at play in wood, bones, and shells too. The story behind the cutlery project? I've always wanted to design a cutlery set, so now I'm trying to bring that idea to life using FDM printing. My finished design needs to be beautiful, easy to use, and ergonomic. To start my design process, I researched the history of cutlery to answer some questions: Why do we use cutlery? Who invented it? And why does a fork have three or four prongs? I learned some really interesting facts along the way and decided to try out a fork with two prongs. Why did I choose that design? Technical-wise, thin walls are tricky to print, so it's better to give more space for the prongs. And from an optical standpoint, it's nice to try something different. The next step was to get an ergonomic, useful shape within the limitations of a 3D printer. So, I shaped a raw model with Plasticine. Based on those results, I created a 3D model on my computer and sketched some possible detailed shapes that I could add. Some interesting facts about cutlery: The spoon is used worldwide - it's been around since the Stone Age. The knife was first used as cutlery by the Romans. They also invented the fork as a piece of cutlery. During the Dark Ages, the Catholic Church banned cutlery because they saw forks as symbols of the devil. In some places, forks were even seen as "womanish" and "dainty". Cutlery established itself again during the 19th century. And before industrialization, everyone had their own cutlery set that they wore on a belt.
