Customizable Waterproof Pill Box
cults3d
This is a waterproof pill container featuring a 7-day compartmented storage tray that fits snugly inside the lid's bayonet fixture. Closing the lid requires approximately one-eighth of a turn. The design is fully parameterized in Fusion 360, allowing for easy adjustments to diameter, length, and the number of compartments in the tray. The adjustable parameters are clearly listed in the attached image. For an effective seal, print with TPU or a similar flexible material. I successfully printed this design using three perimeters, submerging it under ten centimeters of water for ten minutes without any leakage. However, to rely on its waterproof capabilities, consider sealing the surface and thoroughly testing it first. If planning to store pills, use food-safe filament. Printing: No supports are required, as overhangs are moderate with no bridging needed. Critical layer height is necessary in the region of the interlocking surfaces of the bayonet mechanism. I recommend using variable layer height to minimize layer height in that area. With less than two millimeters of vertical height, it has minimal impact on overall print time. Excellent results were achieved at 0.08mm layers and good results at 0.13mm layers. The tube's bottom surface forms part of the seal, so a smooth and level bed is essential for a successful seal. If your bed is uneven, you may need to polish the surface by hand after printing on PEI, which didn't require any post-processing in my case. Printing the O-Ring: For the o-ring, I used TPU with three perimeters, plenty of top and bottom layers, and 30% infill. Be sure not to under-extrude, as water could leak through the seal itself. With my extruder, a 120% extrusion multiplier was necessary for soft TPU. The material needs to be fairly soft; I found Amazon Basics TPU and eSUN eLastic 85A TPE work well, but SainSmart TPU is too hard. After Printing: The closure mechanism may feel stiff the first few times it's operated. Assembling it initially with just the seal inside the ring of the lid (refer to the diagram) and opening and closing it several dozen times can help loosen up the mechanism. Once loosened, add the cap component into the lid. If printed with a fat layer height, tidy up the interlocking surfaces by hand before it will close properly.
