A standard hinge is simpler to design than its butt hinge counterpart, more fragile when manufactured, and larger than you might prefer. The solution lies in creating this hinge using a different (smaller) gauge than the knuckle diameter, which allows for thinner materials. This thinner gauge requires a bit more clearance between the knuckles due to increased slop. To ensure ease of breaking the support material on your first try, the hinge needs sufficient clearance so that you break a leaf rather than freeing up the hinge prematurely. Like its butt hinge inspiration, this standard hinge is manufactured entirely from plastic and will suffice for applications such as box tops or top-opening cabinet doors. However, using it to hang heavy doors or as hinges on bottom-opening cabinet doors (as found in ovens) may lead to eventual tear-out of the hinge due to excessive stress. This custom-designed hinge accommodates countersunk #4 wood screws. To successfully customize this hinge, review and familiarize yourself with standard hinge terminology. Post-Printing Instructions: Carefully force the hinge to clear the support material. The hinge features built-in support material between the knuckles, preventing it from fusing together when printed. To work the hinge free, be gentler than with the butt hinge – avoid applying excessive pressure that might break the support material. If necessary, secure one leaf in a vise and grip the other leaf on a knuckle to facilitate movement. Once freed, wiggle the hinge back and forth until it moves smoothly.
