Customizable Polygonal Picture Frame
thingiverse
I initially created a simple customizable OpenSCAD file for rectangular picture frames using some of the sample mouldings from http://www.hornermillwork.com/cad-library/mouldings. I edited five DWG profiles to create DXF files to import into OpenSCAD, giving me a little variation, and it worked pretty well. After finishing the rectangular OpenSCAD file, I created several different OpenSCAD files for 3,4,6 & sided frames. After those worked, I developed calculations needed to make a Polygonal Picture frame with whatever number of sides you want. I then decided to make a customizable profile with variable width, thickness and up to five different cuts along the length of the profile & one cut along the miter joint top edge: 1. Inside edge; 2. Outside edge; 3. Center Cut; 4. Between Center & Outside Edge with variable offset (shown with four-sided circle cut); 5. Between Center & Inside Edge with variable offset; 6. Custom Cut along Miter Joint. The inside and outside edges can be rounded, chamfered (four-sided circle) or filleted like the center cut in attached image of one moulding profile. It seems this could be useful for cutting custom mouldings or picture frames with a CNC machine or 3D printer. To make the rabbit cut easier to 3D print, I added an option to taper that cut up at 45 degrees. There is also an option to add base thickness if you do not want the frame open in the center. The profile samples I used from the moulding library are DXF files, so you could create your own custom profile if you want to get even fancier. I am drawing these in mm units, but added an option for Units = inches which simply divides the mm by 25.4 for the variables used. This OpenSCAD file will work with Thingiverse Customizer or you can have even more flexibility by downloading & editing the OpenSCAD file. The Thingiverse customizer does not seem to work with DXF files, so you will have to download the OpenSCAD file to use that option. The rectangular version where the Length and Width are different lengths I will add as a remix so that can be opened in the customizer as well. I noticed that I had to repair the generated STL files using Netfabb & I have not figured out how to fix that. I usually run my STL files thru that program anyway.
With this file you will be able to print Customizable Polygonal Picture Frame with your 3D printer. Click on the button and save the file on your computer to work, edit or customize your design. You can also find more 3D designs for printers on Customizable Polygonal Picture Frame.
