Customizable MPCNC mount for round tools
thingiverse
This is a customizable tool holder written in OpenSCAD to attach round tools to the Mostly Printed CNC machine (MPCNC) ver 525. It has not yet been fully tested because I found a suitable mount on Thingiverse for my exact tool, a Harbor Freight cutout tool. The design allows multiple holders for a single tool with varying diameters across its length, such as the aforementioned Harbor Freight tool. If your tool is a uniform cylinder, you can simply print multiple copies of the same mount and skip most instructions. I won't use Thingiverse Customizer because it's essential to have OpenSCAD open to iterate quickly and see the echo output from the script. If you use this model, please let me know if it worked for you! If you improve on it, share your modifications so I can link to them here. Instructions: 1. Put the tool's largest diameter into the td variable. 2. Hit F5 and observe the "effective tool offset" - all holders for the same tool must use the same tool offset, but this value will be adjusted if the size of the tool requires it. Also, check the model to ensure you can physically screw it into the Z carriage as-is. There's logic to move the holes up if the tool ring is too big, but it may not be perfect. 3. You can increase the tool offset to make the screws easier to access (but this reduces rigidity). When done, verify that the effective tool offset matches what's stored in to_proposed so that smaller holders for the same tool have the same offset. 4. If you're satisfied with the holder, hit F6 and save. 5. Put the tool's next largest diameter into td, then hit F5 to check, followed by F6+save to get an STL file; make sure to keep the tool offset unchanged. 6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 for as many holder models as you think your tool needs. Refinements: * If you need more rigidity between the tool ring and mount, adjust the tool_coverage variable. * If you want more play in tightening, adjust the gap variable. * If you prefer a thicker or taller ring, modify the th and ht variables. Known issues: There's no nut trap on the clamp, so you'll require pliers or a wrench to tighten it. The "ears" that you screw into the Z carriage could benefit from additional reinforcement.
