After searching for a reasonably priced vertical dock solution for a long time, I decided to make use of the existing dongles for a macbook my wife uses. The result of this experiment is this dock which should allow for more space on her desk, better looking work area, almost same docking/undocking time as compared to her previous setup without anything.

Next Improvement Ideas: Make the dock part more stable to allow one handed docking/undocking operation.

Ignore the poor paintjob, still working on that skill!

Print Settings

Printer Brand:

Prusa

Printer:

Prusa Mini+

Rafts:

Doesn't Matter

Supports:

Yes

Resolution:

0.2mm

Infill:

10-15%

Filament:

Polyterra PLA PLA Red and Black

Notes:

I added supports for the holes where the components need to be assembled into. YMMV based on your printer. I added them to make sure there is no weird sagging/curling of the filament to make sure the assembly can be done without any post processing.

How I Designed This

Fusion 3D Design - Modifiable

The design has 3 parts. Many aspects of the design have been parameterized, so go through the parameters to mess with the the sizes of the arm and total size of the laptop.

The 'dock' part was designed for a Macbook Pro 13 Intel 2020 version. The USB C Dock holes are specifically sized to fit the docks that I have. The smaller, lower one is an Apple official USB C dongle. The top one is a generic one off of Amazon. These holes can be modified for different laptops/connectors by editing the 'Sketch 1' in the 'cable_dock' component.

Similarly the logo can be changed by changing the 'logo_sketch' component in the top level sketches directory.

I painted the colors onto the text after the print completed.

Assembly

Assembly is pretty straight-forward, just push the 'arm' into the 'main_holder'. Then push the dock part into the other side of the 'arm'. The 'dock' is made to have a little bit of horizontal play within the arm's assembly to allow for error in the positioning of the cable holes.

Category: Computer
