Customizable hexagonal shelves

thingiverse

Inspired by several versatile shelving systems found here on Thingiverse, this customizable system offers an innovative approach for creating hexagonal shelves with ease. A significant advantage here lies in the use of a script written in OpenSCAD, allowing for effortless adaptation to different materials and screw sizes with just a few clicks. By default, the system is set up to work with 1/4" plywood, utilizing #8 self-tapping screws for secure attachment. However, it's possible to generate the brackets either "open" or "closed," the latter offering enhanced strength by filling in one side of the bracket. A crucial tweak recommended by designers involves making the thickness of the bracket an exact multiple of the layer width during printing. For instance, setting the thickness at 2.4 mm will result in a printed piece consisting entirely of shells, yielding excellent appearance and structural integrity. Printer Settings Printer Brand: MakerBot Printer: MakerBot Replicator 1 Rafts: No Supports: No Notes: Pretty easy to print, resulting in an exceptional final product. Post-Printing Assembly is surprisingly simple; the pieces fit together snugly through friction alone. Locking them in place becomes a straightforward process with #8 self-tapping screws measuring approximately 1/2" or less in length. Designing This The entire project was carefully crafted as a single OpenSCAD script, allowing for flexibility and modification on the fly. Future updates may involve transforming it into a user-friendly customizer tool.
