Customizable Engraved Image Shade
thingiverse
The Van Alles Wat's interactive lampshade design project inspired a customizable lamp shade design that allows users to upload an image for engraving on a cylinder surface, usually in the shape of an Ikea Lampan shade. Users can adjust its size, proportions, and engraving depth. The design works best with depth maps or black-and-white designs where dark pixels are deeply recessed and white ones remain flat. Default output is intended for 3D printing as a vase-like object or lampshade without infill and top/bottom layers. Alternatively, you can specify a fixed inner radius for variable thickness walls. Regular photographs may look good when backlit with these settings. A recent update added the border_offset option that shapes borders based on image surface ends if nonzero, otherwise they're circular by default. The original "shark" design is credited to Fred Hsu's Wikimedia Commons image. One user printed the sharkshade.stl sample model at 0.3 scale in brown PLA on a Printrbot Simple with 0.15mm layer height, 1 perimeter, no infill or top/bottom layers.
