Customizable Convex Polyhedra

Customizable Convex Polyhedra

thingiverse

The openSCAD database encompasses all convex polyhedra featuring regular faces except prisms and anti-prisms. This includes Platonic, Archimedean, and Johnson solids (over 100 in total). The provided images feature the entire collection of Platonic solids along with a few Archimedean creations made using the customizer. In addition to this, you can print the five Platonic solids by utilizing the included platonic.stl file, each with a height of approximately 2 cm. This work is built upon previous projects such as George Hart's VRML polyhedra models (http://www.georgehart.com/virtual-polyhedra/vp.html) and pmoews' polyhedra Thingiverse designs (e.g., http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:16508). These designs have the face data from Hart's VRML files converted to triangles for openSCAD compatibility. The customizer provides two styles and a choice of 110 polyhedra, with an adjustable shell thickness (default 30%). To print your chosen polyhedron, ensure that the largest face is flat on the print bed. The platonic.stl file contains all five Platonic solids (created using the customizer) and should take under 2 hours to print. However, there are a couple of issues with the "cutout" style: the cutouts respect the origin rather than the face's normal, causing misalignment for certain Johnson polyhedra; also, face normals aren't pre-computed, which slows down rendering for large objects.
